Wolves hero’s funny response to ‘never buy a drink again’ after derby winner

Fer Lopez reflected on his goalscoring form so far this season after his latest goal fired Wolves to Black Country derby victory.

Fer Lopez is loving life in front of goal after identifying his goalscoring as an area he needed to improve.

The Wolves star has already found the net five times this season - four in the Championship - with his latest strike proving the winner in Sunday’s Black Country derby.

The Spaniard, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Celta Vigo, admits he is delighted with his progress under Cesar Peixoto after previously seeing himself more as a provider than a goalscorer.

“With four in the league, which is most important and I’m very happy especially as it was something I needed to improve.

“I was usually a playmaker, trying to give assists, but now I have the eye for goal and I’m learning from Rodrigo (Gomes) a lot because that’s the type of goal he scores.

“I’m trying to be a little bit more alive in the box so if they make a mistake we punish them.”

Lopez did exactly that in the derby, pressing Albion into a mistake at the back before pouncing to fire Wolves to victory.

You could assume the 22-year-old will never have to buy a drink in Wolverhampton again.

He laughed, however, when asked about the prospect - admitting he does not go out for drinks much.

He smiled, and said: “I don’t go out a lot for drinks! I’m proud and happy to make the fans happy.”

With that strike, Lopez wrote his name into Black Country derby folklore and continued an impressive start to the season.

The 22-year-old is hungry for more goals - and wants to help Wolves secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

“I know it’s a big deal and in a few years time I will look back and see,” he said of his goal.

“I am very happy to contribute, I will focus on the present, to try win every game possible and get Wolves back to the league we deserve to be in, the Premier League.”
