Aston Villa player ratings: Midfielder shines as visitors draw blank

We rate the players after Villa’s winless start to the season continued.

ZION SUZUKI

A first clean sheet for the Japan international and barring one minor handling error in the first half, this was a solid performance.

Solid 6

MATTY CASH

Linked up with McGinn really well in the first half. Shoved over in the second period and might have had a penalty.

Bright 7

VICTOR LINDELOF

A steady display from the centre-back, though there will be far tougher tests ahead. Usually in the right place.

Positioning 7

TYRONE MINGS

Saw a second half effort blocked. Solid defensively but in a match when Villa saw so much of the ball, he might have used it better.

Passing 6

IAN MAATSEN

Has been much better in the past two matches after a nightmare opening at Brighton. Got into some very good positions.

Lively 7

BOUBACAR KAMARA

Is looking more like his old self with every match. Gives such strong protection to the back four.

Reassuring 7

ROSS BARKLEY

Villa’s brightest player on the ball and was potentially denied a goal by a brilliant save. Has started the season pretty well.

Quality 8

JOHN MCGINN

Started brightly but the main memory from this match will be his miss. Should have done more with the space he had.

Miss 6

EMI BUENDIA

The kind of match the playmaker really should have grabbed by the scruff of the neck. Second half miss summed things up.

Disappointing 5

GEORGE HEMMINGS

Growing confidence with each match. Had Villa’s first effort on target of the season and should have ended the match with assist.

Improving 7

NICOLAS JACKSON

Not bad but not great either. Looks like a player still playing his way into fitness and Villa will hope the form follows.

Average 6

SUBSTITUTES

Alysson 6 (for Hemmings, 75), Alejandro Garnacho 5 (for Buendia, 75) Matteo Ruggeri 5 (for Ian Maatsen, 75), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (for Cash, 85), Tammy Abraham (for Jackson, 85) Subs not used: Bogarde, Torres, Mbaye, Bizot (gk).
