Liam Virgo went from being a healthy child to one who couldn’t move or even speak. He was in hospital for many months, the doctors at first baffled by his condition. He had so many brain scans, blood tests and other medical procedures but everything came back normal. He was eventually diagnosed with FND (Functional Neurological Disorder).
He was unable to walk for five years, was bedridden for three years and he was unable to talk for a year. He doesn’t remember the early days of FND and life before it he says is a blur. Liam describes feeling trapped inside his own body, he also says it was like being awake in a body that had stopped working.

While bedridden Liam found comfort in London and the TV show Loose Women, It was his dream to visit London and to meet the Loose Women but due to his FND he wasn’t well enough to go. When he was well enough he went to meet some of them in his favourite city.
It’s been a long hard battle for Liam, painful and very isolating relearning how to do things his body used to take for granted. In recent years his FND symptoms have improved and he’s now able to talk again, now that Liam is able to talk he wants to use his voice to raise awareness about his condition.
Nine years on from his FND Liam is now slowly starting to recover, he can still have difficult days with his condition but is learning to walk again which is a huge achievement for him.
He hopes by sharing his story it will give people hope and hopefully raise awareness. Liam says that his FND took his voice and body away from him but he’s now more determined than ever to not let his FND hold him back from doing anything.
