The project, which included the installation of 16 solar photovoltaic roof panels, together with a hybrid converter and three energy storage batteries, was made possible thanks to a grant of £12,800 from Enovert Community Trust through the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF).

Stephanie Searl, Chair of the Scout Group’s Board of Trustees, said: “We are very grateful to Enovert Community Trust for its generous grant, which has enabled the Franche Scout Hut to become energy self-sufficient, at a time when high energy costs have impacted on the Group’s funds, and when environmental and sustainability concerns are of paramount importance. As a result, we no longer have to worry about finding funds for heating and electricity in the future, freeing up resources so we can offer more exciting activities to our young members.

“Following a comprehensive refurbishment project last year the hut is looking great and now provides a fantastic, warm and comfortable base for the Group’s activities. We are hoping to open the venue for use by members of the local community soon following strong interest from numerous local groups.”

Angela Haymonds, Trust Manager of Enovert Community Trust, said: “The Trust is delighted to have supported this important project to help 21st Wyre Forest Scout Group achieve energy self-sufficiency. Switching to renewable solar energy will yield considerable savings which can be reinvested to provide exciting opportunities and activities for the Group’s members, while the venue will also benefit other groups in the local community.”

21st Wyre Forest Scout Group is located nine miles from Himley Landfill Site.
