Wolverhampton project receives grant from National Lottery Heritage Fund

ConGens is delighted to announce that it has been awarded a generous grant of £100,842 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This grant will fund a two-year heritage project entitled "Our Heritage of Caring," which aims to capture and document the experiences of Caribbean individuals who came to the United Kingdom to support the newly established NHS.

Through a series of interviews, the project will focus on the personal stories and contributions of Caribbeans who played a pivotal role in the development of the NHS and explore factors that provide insights into the caring nature of these pioneers that compelled them to endure the challenges of settling in the UK whilst supporting the development of this fledgling service.

Project outcomes will include the production of a book and website, both of which will serve as invaluable resources for future generations. The book will feature the stories of the Caribbean NHS workers, while the website will provide a digital platform for sharing these narratives with a wider audience.

"We are incredibly grateful to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for this significant grant," said Ian, Project Coordinator. "This project will not only celebrate the contributions of the Caribbean community but also preserve these important stories for future generations. We are excited about this project and sharing these remarkable experiences with people locally and beyond."

The project began in February 2025, and will involve local residents and communities. It aims to promote a deeper understanding of the character, culture and contributions of Caribbeans who helped establish and shape the gem of the nation.
