Wednesbury care home creates dementia-friendly community for residents
HC-One’s Dovedale Court Care Home in Wednesbury, has created a dementia-friendly community consisting of various shops to engage residents.

Dovedale Court has setup shops, including a florist, cleaning station, woodwork and tool station, baby’s nursery, post offices and an outdoor pub and food area for residents to enjoy. The dementia-friendly community located in the home’s communal areas, conservatory and garden as well as the wooden shop located on the home’s dementia and residential floor.
The residents and relatives revealed what they wanted to be added into the dementia community, including exploring past jobs of residents and their hobbies to bring back reminiscent memories for them.
The dementia-friendly community will provide a range of positive benefits for residents living with dementia at Dovedale Court. This includes enhanced cognitive stimulation and increased social interaction through participating in a Friday shop routine, where the residents look forward to going to the shop to make their purchases.

Dawn Allen, Home Manager at Dovedale Court Care Home, said: "I am delighted that we have been able to create a dementia friendly community within Dovedale Court. This will have a number of positive benefits for our residents living with dementia including providing them with opportunities to experience feelings of normalcy, personal value and to reminisce.”
