Dudley community unites to restore a 1963 E-type Jaguar

A rare icon of British motoring history is set to be restored as part of an inspiring community project in Dudley. The Maurice Project, spearheaded by local charity Provision House, will see the restoration of a 1963 Series 1, 3.8 FHC, Jaguar E-Type. Normally, only a wealthy collector would get to work on a car this special, but we are offering this once in a lifetime opportunity to anyone who lives in the Dudley area, bringing together people of all ages from across the borough.

This extraordinary project was made possible by the generosity of Maurice Pope, a local benefactor from Gornal, who bequeathed his cherished Jaguar E-Type to Provision House in his will. Maurice’s heartfelt wish was for his beloved car to become the centrepiece of a community initiative, fostering education, skills development, and shared passion for British automotive heritage.

Currently on public display at DMC Motorcycles, King Street, Dudley, the Jaguar E-Type will remain there until May, offering the public a chance to see the car before restoration begins. The project will then move to Dudley College’s Black Country & Marches Institute of Technology on Zoological Drive, where restoration work will commence.

“We are honoured to fulfil Maurice’s vision,” said Nick Gainsford, Project Manager at Provision House. “This project isn’t just about restoring the car—it’s about bringing people together, passing on valuable skills, and celebrating the Midlands’ incredible engineering heritage. We hope the community will embrace this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of something truly special.”

The Maurice Project invites local schools, colleges, businesses, and classic car enthusiasts to get involved in this remarkable restoration effort. Whether through hands-on work, sharing expertise, or simply coming along to see the progress, there are plenty of ways for the people of Dudley to take part.
