J B Priestly’s They Came to a City at Oldbury Rep
A deep exploration of human nature, as resonant today as it was 80 years ago. As dawn breaks, a group of very different characters find themselves outside the walls of a strange and mysterious city. At daybreak, a doorway opens, seemingly offering a utopian existence to those willing to enter.

With the choices the characters must make, Priestley's play explores how the human condition and social conscience influence how societies behave. Ultimately questioning whether universal friendship can ever really exist, and the very meaning of our existence.
Oldbury Rep brings to the stage this fascinating exploration of human nature in an engaging production which was first performed in 1943 at the height of The Second World War. The following year, the play was adapted into a film which featured many of the cast from the play’s original West End run, and even includes a cameo appearance by Priestly himself. No doubt, the backdrop of the Second World War and what would come afterwards influenced the play’s themes and it is perhaps, in the current political climate, as resonant today as it was 80 years ago.
