Boccia is a target ball sport that tests both muscle control and accuracy. Played from a seated position, players propel balls towards a white target ball (the jack), aiming to land as close as possible. It’s an ideal sport for wheelchair users.

Yasmin Hussain, Community Engagement Officer for Birmingham Community Leisure Trust (BCLT), said: “The first two sessions of Birmingham Boccia Club have been a great success and showcased the welcoming and inclusive nature of the club, with players of all abilities joining in the fun.

“Anyone is welcome to join, whether you are looking to get active, meet new people, or try out a new sport. Sessions are open to individuals of all abilities, and the club aims to create a supportive and friendly environment for all participants.”

Stacey Reed, Partnership and Engagement Manager for Boccia England, said: “It is great to see a boccia club being set up in Birmingham. We know that people play boccia in Birmingham, but this is a newly affiliated club that has been supported by multiple organisations across the City. Including United by 2022, Sport Birmingham, Access Sport, Serco and of course support from our wonderful volunteers.

“The first session brought in people of all ages and all disabilities, and we are looking forward to seeing how the club grows from strength to strength over time.”

The game is played indoors on a court roughly the same size as a badminton court and can be competed in as an individual, in pairs, or as a team of three. This sport offers something for everyone, encouraging physical activity, teamwork, and precision.
