Former Kidderminster vicar reflects on life of service on 95th birthday
Edward Youens, a beloved former vicar and well-respected member of his community, celebrated his 95th birthday at Foley Grange Care Home in Kidderminster on Friday, 14 February.

Edward’s life has been one of faith, service, and resilience. Raised in a sheltered upbringing, he once dreaded the thought of joining the national service. However, looking back, he recalls those years as some of the happiest of his life.
Serving with the Royal Engineers at the GHQ in Egypt near the Great Lakes, Edward’s time in the military also introduced him to the MMG Missions, a Christian organization that provided him with meals and support.
Upon being demobilized from the army, Edward embarked on a short business career in London but eventually left the business world to pursue his calling, enrolling at Ripon Hall Oxford Theological College in 1955.
In 1962, Edward became the vicar of the Parish of Kempsey, near Worcester, where he found great joy in serving his community.
His devotion to the church led to his appointment as vicar of St. George’s Kidderminster in 1969, years before moving on to Ribersford, Bewdley. In 1982, Edward was appointed Rural Dean of Kidderminster and was made Canon of Worcester Cathedral in 1978.
Edward’s ministry journey continued when he moved to Dorset in 1981, where he served as Team Rector of six churches and three team vicars, as well as Rural Dean of Lime Bay. In 1985, Lord Cloudry appointed Edward as vicar of Easebourne Priory Church and Chaplain to King Edward VII Hospital in Midhurst.
Throughout his life, Edward has lived by a powerful quote from Psalm 53: “I was afraid where no fear was.” He believes that the things he once feared never turned out as badly as he imagined, helping him approach life with a calm and open heart.
To celebrate his 95th birthday, Edward enjoyed a special meal with family and friends. When asked his secret to living a long and happy life, Edward said: “Eat and drink whatever you like – within reason.” He also joked, “Avoid all exercise!”
Bethany Phillips, the Front of House Manager at Foley Grange, added, ‘It’s been such a pleasure hearing all about Edward’s incredible life of service, he’s a truly special gentleman. We’re honoured to have been able to celebrate his 95th birthday with him.’
