Retiree Tony Wilding, 87, from Cannock, thought someone was playing a joke on him when he received a call to say he had won the £20,000 jackpot in the St Giles Hospice lottery rollover draw.

Tony said: “I couldn’t believe it when I first received the call – I immediately thought it was a scam!”

But Tony was presented with his cheque earlier this week, and he has kindly donated a percentage of his winnings back to St Giles. He continued: “My friend died at St Giles in October and the care he received was outstanding. I've donated a percentage of my winnings back to the hospice as a thank you.

“I support many cancer charities, and it has given me a good feeling to give something back to St Giles, knowing it will help others.’’

The prize presentation took place at the St Giles Hospice shop in Cannock, where Tony celebrated his win and shared his thanks for the vital care the hospice provides.

Encouraging others to sign up to the hospice lottery, Tony said: “If people aren't playing the St Giles Hospice Lottery, I’d obviously encourage them to sign up and play to support the hospice and their work.”

Helen Curran, Individual Giving Manager at St Giles Hospice, added: “We’d like to congratulate Tony on his wonderful lottery win and thank him for his incredible generosity in making a donation back to the hospice. Tony’s donation will help us continue to provide vital care for local people, and their loved ones, living with a terminal illness.”

Funds raised from the St Giles Hospice Lottery support the hospice’s vital work, ensuring compassionate end of life care for patients and their families. Last year the lottery helped raise over £800,000 for St Giles.
