Smethwick businessman leaves lasting legacy in transport industry
The Smethwick community is mourning the loss of David John Sheldon, a proud local businessman whose entrepreneurial spirit helped shape the transport industry both in the West Midlands and beyond. Dave, as he was affectionately known, built Sheldon Clayton Logistics from humble beginnings into a thriving company, all while remaining deeply rooted in his hometown.
Born on 29 October 1944 in Smethwick to Violet and Arthur Sheldon, Dave spent his early years in the area alongside his older siblings, Brian and Judy. He attended Smethwick Hall School before his natural business acumen led him to an early start in enterprise. At just 15, he and his brother were given the fishing and boating rights at West Smethwick Park, where they rented out boats on the lake – his first taste of entrepreneurship.
After school, Dave initially pursued an apprenticeship as a pattern maker but soon realised it wasn’t for him. His career took a turn when he worked in his father’s betting office in Smethwick, where he met Billy and Eddy Clayton and began his journey taking on transport work. Over 50 years, this venture evolved into the hugely successful Sheldon Clayton Logistics Group, now employing around 200 people and operating a fleet of 65 trucks. The business, headquartered in West Bromwich, is also a shareholder in Pallet Track, boasting a £38 million annual turnover.
Beyond his business success, Dave was well known in Smethwick for his kindness, sense of humour, and unwavering work ethic. Whether enjoying a curry and a beer at a local restaurant, chatting with employees on his daily rounds, or spending time with his beloved dogs, who accompanied him to work every day, he remained a down-to-earth and much-loved figure.
A loyal husband, father, and grandfather, Dave married Patricia (Pat) Sheldon in 1969, and together they raised their twins, Katie Thomas and Daniel Sheldon. Both children, along with several other family members, now work at Sheldon Clayton Logistics, carrying on his legacy. He also took great pride in his grandchildren, Lola and Rocco.
His wife, Pat, shared: "We miss him so much already. We lived and worked together for so many years—he was the life and soul of both our family and the business. We will continue the success of the company through his legacy, with the help of our dedicated employees."
A funeral service will take place on 15 February at Sandwell Valley Crematorium, where family, friends, and colleagues will come together to celebrate his life.
A true Smethwick success story, Dave Sheldon’s impact on the local community and transport industry will be remembered for generations to come.
