Antonia Bance MP: "Where you’re from shouldn’t determine where you end up. If you work hard, you should be able to get on in life"
One of the best things that our new Labour government is doing is tripling government investment in breakfast clubs.
It will make such a difference to local kids – and their parents.
Nearly 31,000 children in Sandwell – and more in Dudley - could benefit from free breakfast clubs.
Providing a healthy school breakfast at the start of the school day helps kids concentrate in school and improves behaviour in the classroom.
At the same time, breakfast clubs help with the costs of childcare for parents at the beginning of the day. The clubs are estimated to save parents £450 a year.
More than half of parents say they have problems finding childcare that is flexible enough to fit their needs. Four in ten mums say they have had to work fewer hours than they would like because of childcare costs. Now lots of parents will be able to get to work earlier and earn more without paying extra for childcare – cos of breakfast clubs.
Breakfast clubs boost both parents’ work choices and children’s life chances.
But under the last Tory government, these clubs were available in just one in 10 primary schools across England. Labour will make them available for all our children – in every school.
I am proud to represent a party and a government with a mission: to break down the barriers to opportunity for every child, no matter where they live.
Where you’re from shouldn’t determine where you end up. If you work hard, you should be able to get on in life. That’s proper Black Country values.
