Meet the Birmingham mother-daughter duo taking one of the UK’s most important sectors by storm
New research reveals that kids actually do listen to their parents, specifically when it comes to thinking about their future careers. Birmingham’s Tracey and Chloe Duggan are living proof of this - the mother-daughter duo taking the UK’s logistics sector by storm.
The new research from awareness campaign Generation Logistics highlights the importance of listening to parents when it comes to careers, with three in four Brits actually following their parents’ advice. Now Tracey and Chloe, the mother and daughter pair who are both making waves in logistics with Kuehne + Nagel, demonstrate how family advice can shape careers for the better, and why they’re encouraging other people to consider a career in logistics.
Tracey Duggan, mother to Chloe, has been enjoying a successful career in logistics for the past 22 years, including her current role as Road Logistics Healthcare Service Manager for Kuehne + Nagel. Her daughter Chloe, 24, jumped into logistics following her mother’s encouragement, and now coordinates international shipments for major expos and events.
“I knew my mum had always enjoyed working in logistics, and seeing her excitement and passion gave me confidence that I’d find my place in the sector,” Chloe shares.
Based in Aston, Birmingham, working for the same company has been a rewarding experience for both of them and they’ve embraced the different strengths they bring to their roles. Tracey explains, “It’s great to work for Kuehne + Nagel alongside Chloe, even though our roles are very different. My team loves that Chloe and I are here together - they always joke that we’re a ‘K+N family.’”
Chloe agrees that sharing a role in the sector with her mother brings benefits - and conversation topics. “It’s nice to know I can call my mum for advice anytime,” she says. “She’s been a great mentor, especially when I was starting out in the industry. When I was doing my supply chain degree at Aston University, her knowledge and network connections helped me to reach the right people for my projects. Of course, it’s a regular topic at family dinners, and while my Dad and brother sometimes get tired of logistics talk, they love seeing us thrive!”
Their advice to anyone considering a logistics career? “Freight never sleeps!” Tracey says with a laugh. “This is a fast-paced field with so many opportunities for people who are willing to work hard,” Chloe adds, “Logistics is growing every day, so if you’re open to learning, you’ll always find new paths to explore.”
Bethany Windsor, Programme Director at Generation Logistics, added: “Tracey and Chloe’s journey shows the power of family ties and the ever-evolving opportunities in logistics. Together, they’re paving the way for others to see logistics not just as a sector, but as a thriving career where family, experience, and individual ambition can flourish side by side.
“Their story proves that there is a role for everyone within the sector, no matter your age, qualifications or interests. Taking time to discuss your abilities with people who know you well can help you identify your strengths, which can then guide you in choosing the right role.”
