70s retro music night to raise awareness and funds for Brierley Hill Samaritans

The Samaritan’s vision is that fewer people die by suicide. Our mission is to make sure there’s someone there for anyone who needs someone, to give people ways to cope and the skills to be there for others, and to campaign to make suicide prevention a national and local priority.

The local Brierley Hill branch of Samaritans took its first call 52 years ago in 1973. Since then volunteers have been taking calls and campaigning to reduce the suicide rate in Dudley and surrounding areas.

Suicide rates locally are calculated over a three-year rolling average. In Dudley, 8.8 suicides per 100,000 people were registered between 2021 and 2023, the highest rate increase for decades.

Going retro to believe in tomorrow

As a self-funded branch of the national charity, fundraising is key. A 70s retro music night by the fantastic group ‘STILL2CRAY’ is taking place at Stourbridge Town Hall on Friday, 21 February. Tickets are £12 and available online at Dudley Borough Halls or by calling 01384 812812.

Every penny raised on the evening will make a difference. We know that people are increasingly becoming more emotionally distressed due to the cost-of-living crisis, the aftermath of the pandemic even after five years and on top of other issues that they may already be coping with in their life. When listening to our callers, we focus on their feelings and help them explore what they are going through, day or night.

Our work continues to be as important as ever and we believe in tomorrow - a tomorrow when fewer people will die by suicide.
