Trained at University College London with further specialist training in interventional radiology in Oxford and the West Midlands, Dr McCafferty is one of only 24 specialists in this field to have been awarded the medal since 2001. Conceived as a way of recognising outstanding achievement in the field, the medal’s awarding criteria has grown to encompass the full scope of a winners’ practice. Promoted by the specialism’s professional body, the BSIR, the judges look for a doctor that demonstrates the organisation’s values across all aspects of their professional practice. This includes education, research as well as awareness and excellence in the delivery of care to patients.

Dr McCafferty was found to have exceeded in each of these categories working tirelessly to promote the specialism and achieving some of the highest outcomes for his patients. Moreover, his commitment to education and conducting pioneering research into the treatment of cancer using minimally invasive techniques made his contributions to the profession particularly unique.

As a previous travelling professor, supported by the Royal College of Radiologists and the BSIR, and past president of the BSIR, Dr McCafferty has been working tirelessly to educate and inspire the next generation of doctors and his peers to embrace the full scope of what this comparatively new field of medicine has to offer.

Commenting on the award, Dr McCafferty said: “It’s an honour to be a recipient of such a prestigious award. Interventional Radiology is at the forefront of medical research and innovation, pioneering the way we treat both common and complex conditions. I hope to continue my teaching and research in the years to come.”
