Patients to pick their star healthcare workers
Patients, families and carers who’ve received outstanding care at a West Midlands NHS Trust are being urged to nominate healthcare professionals for a coveted award.
Nominations for the Patient’s Choice Award at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust’s staff recognition event, The Star Awards 2025, are now open.
It is picked by members of the public and recognises an individual or team who have shown kindness and compassion in the care they have provided to a patient or their loved ones either in hospital or out in the community.
The Patient’s Choice Award will be presented to the worthy winners at a glittering awards ceremony and will be particularly special as it will be the first staff awards hosted by the Trust since the opening of the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.
The organisation also runs Sandwell and City Health Campuses – previously Sandwell and City Hospitals and a number of GP and community services at satellite sites across the area.
The previous winners of the award were the Ophthalmology Ward team at City Hospital, for the care they provided to a patient admitted with an eye infection.
The nomination was submitted by the patients’ family, who said the team were welcoming and friendly to both them and their father, doing their best to make him as comfortable as possible during his stay. The family members continued, saying: “We are truly thankful for the team on the eye ward for everything they did for dad, and we are quite sure that they saved his vision. We can’t express what this means to us as a family.”
Diane Wake, Interim Chief Executive of Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust said: “Our staff deserve to receive recognition for their hard work, but to receive that praise from a current or former patient is extra special.
“This will be my first Star Awards since taking up my post and I look forward to hearing stories from those who have received compassionate care from staff at the Trust.”
Chair of Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust Sir David Nicholson said: “There has been a lot of change at the Trust over the past year with the opening of the new Midland Met, and staff across all our sites and in the community have gone above and beyond to ensure patient care remains at a high standard.
“It would mean a lot to any of our healthcare heroes to receive this special award and to know that they have made a positive difference to the experience of a patient or their families. I would encourage all who have received excellent care and support over the last 12 months, whether that has been at Sandwell or City Hospitals or at our new healthcare facility, the Midland Met, to submit a nomination.”
The deadline to submit a nomination form is Friday 31 January, 5pm. Nominations can be made online by clicking here.
The Star Awards 2025 will take place on March 14 and the winning individual or team will be publicly announced on the night.
