Moving campaign for Acorns to dedicate a 'glittering' star

A unique ‘glittering’ star to remember lost loved ones to hang on festive trees at home is at the centre of a moving campaign from Acorns Children’s Hospice this Christmas.

Celebrate Your Star is inviting people to pay tribute to much-missed family members or friends by dedicating a star in their memory and making a donation towards the charity’s vital care for seriously ill children.

In return, a beautiful golden star will be sent to their home and another hung on trees at special festive events across the region – to which everyone will be invited to attend.

Ben Gilchrist, In Memory Manager at Acorns Children’s Hospice, said: “It is the perfect time of year to fondly remember those who are no longer with us, and as well as receiving a glittering golden star for your Christmas tree you’ll be helping support lifeline care for local children.

“Not only can you ensure your loved ones are never forgotten, it’s the perfect way to start Christmas and to celebrate their life by coming along to one of our events.”

Acorns will be hosting three special celebrations where anyone wishing to remember a loved one can come together to see the collection of stars of remembrance. The events are free and open to all whether people choose to make a dedication or not.

They are taking place at Broadway United Reformed Church, Walsall, on Saturday 30 November; at Bournville Quaker Meeting House, Birmingham, on Saturday 7 December; and at Henry Sandon Hall, Worcester, on Sunday 8 December. Attendance is by booking only.

Ben added: “Together, our galaxy of stars will help give the children and families who use Acorns magical moments throughout Christmas and into the New Year. Help can’t wait for them, especially at one of the most difficult times of the year.

“Write a tribute of your own to someone you have lost and come and see it hung on the trees along with the stars at one of our special events, and find their name in our Book of Remembrance. When you choose to Celebrate Your Star your gift will be a light in the darkness.”

Acorns Children’s Hospice provides specialist palliative care for babies, children and young people with life limiting and life threatening conditions, and support for their families.

In the past year, the charity has cared for more than 780 children across the West Midlands, and supported over 1,000 families, including those who are bereaved.

This care and support is provided from Acorns three hospices, based in Birmingham, Walsall and Worcester, and in the community.

Acorns needs around £35,000 each day to provide its children’s hospice care, with two thirds of that amount coming from generous donations and fundraising by the local community.
