King Charles I returns to Lichfield this weekend!
King Charles I returns to Lichfield on Sunday, 17 November for the annual Lichfield Christmas Fayre from 10am-4pm.
Daniel Williams from Sutton Coldfield has toured the length and breadth of the UK retreading the footsteps of King Charles I in character. He has just finished writing a book that will be released next year on his amazing experiences of his travels and his endeavours to highlight the great visitable history that still exists.
Daniel says: "Lichfield has captivating layers of history and a great trail to follow on a visit.
"Lichfield Cathedral has an incredible story, having been used as a garrison for royalists and parliamentarians during the English Civil War. During sieges cannon balls destroyed the roof and central spire. It suffered more damage than any other cathedral during those turbulent times, the Roundheads savagely destroying it's statues, monuments, documents, carvings. Whilst abandoned it once even had squatters!
"The cathedral even has a floor tile remembering the King."
On Sunday King Charles I will be holding court at the Guildhall and making a tour of the city market 11am-2pm then appearing at the historical George and Dragon pub. From behind the building the dashing Prince Rupert of the Rhine (nephew of the king) fired his cannons towards the city during Siege of Lichfield 1643.
Today, Prince Rupert’s Mound is a Scheduled Monument and has a commemorative plinth in the beer garden.
The Lichfield Christmas Fayre is hosted and organised by volunteers within the Lichfield Chamber of Trade and Commerce and has been established for over 50 years. With over 100 stalls, it is a brilliant day for buying unique gifts.
