There used to be three sergeants who looked after policing in Wednesbury but that number was cut to two after a shake-up. It has now emerged that just one sergeant will be responsible for the whole town as the second has been transferred to West Bromwich.

Campaigners gathered to protest against the move outside the town's police station in Holyhead Road yesterday. However, the area's Inspector, Akeel Najib said today it is just a temporary measure and a second sergeant would be reinstated soon.

Wednesbury North ward councillor Elaine Costigan, said: "We demonstrated over three sergeants going to one. All we are left with is one sergeant and we have had no consultation at the moment.

"People are angry and upset that they knew nothing about it and are concerned about the crime."

Maggie Dorsett, aged 66, from Kendrick Street, was the victim of an attempted mugging earlier this year. The grandmother-of-eight, said: "The big problem of all of this is the crime rates in Wednesbury is rising and they are taking away the sergeant, where is the logic in that?"
