A £1 million overhaul of a Staffordshire golf club could help deliver a tourist boost for the area, say council chiefs.

This video shows the work being carried out at Chase Golf Club in Penkridge, where a new 80-seater restaurant is being created.

The establishment will have a Cannock Chase theme with meals sourced from the Staffordshire area.

The scheme, funded by the golf club itself, will also see two offices transformed into 17 guest rooms, including a bridal suite.

Up to 30 new jobs could also be created as a result of the work.

South Staffordshire District Councillor Leonard Bates said that there was 'a real need for hotel accommodation' in the area.

And he added: "I attended a conference there some weeks ago and I had a chance to speak to the owner.

"I think there's a need for hotel accommodation in the area and I do believe it will help with tourism."

Bryan Davies, operations director at the Pottal Pool Road site, says the plans will benefit the area's economy while making the club a 'complex' rather than just a venue or club.

He said: "We currently host 35 wedding receptions each year, but unfortunately they all have to stay elsewhere.

"With the new guest rooms and restaurant we'll have everything under one roof like a complex – they can use the spa and the driving range too."

Work on the new rooms is set to be completed by the end of next year. The new restaurant is planned to officially open on Valentine's Day next year.

A new spa and health club has already been opened at the site since a local family bought the venue in 2009.

Mr Davies is appealing for local people to get in touch with ideas for the name of the new restaurant.

The person whose name is selected will win a meal for two.

Email Mr Davies at fandbmanager@thechasegolf.co.uk with name ideas by September 30.
