Sporting vicar revs up for flock

A vintage car-mad vicar led an open air service from the seat of his beloved MG Midget in front of dozens of worshippers.

Rev Richard Cornfield gave readings and led hymns while standing in his convertible 1969 model, parked in the middle of a field at Cooper and Jordan CE Primary School in Aldridge.

"I have always loved classic cars but have never had the chance to combine it with church before, the aisles are a bit too narrow to drive it up," he joked.

"I don't know if I am the first to have led a service from the seat of a sports car, I have never heard of anyone else doing this and I would like to think I can start a trend."

The unusual service was part of Aldridge Parish Church community fun day, where church members also got the chance to thrown wet sponges at Mr Cornfield.

Salesman Jason Standerwick, aged 44, from Aldridge, said: "It shows our church is not fuddy duddy and there is nothing wrong with having a funny vicar.

"It is a bit different and I think it is great, he is really driving home the message."

The City of Lichfield Concert Band performed and other attractions on the day included a bouncy castle, face painting, a brass band, homemade crafts and jewellery.
