Fundraising hairdressers from a salon in Wolverhampton got snipping as part of a charity "cut-a-thon" which has raised thousands of pounds.

Staff from Ego Hair Salon, in Newbridge Parade, Tettenhall, organised the event to pull in cash for Macmillan Cancer Research. Customers were not charged for having their hair styled throughout the day, but instead asked to make a donation for the charity.

Anybody who donated £1 was put into a free raffle draw for the chance of winning a prize, including a holiday for two in Majorca, signed Wolves, Aston Villa and Manchester shirts as well as signed Wolves posters and football.

Staff also auctioned off a signed England shirt along with two VIP tickets to Wembley which raised £1,500 alone.

The fundraising event was the latest organised by salon owner Layla Kaveh, aged 26, to keep her mother Yasmin's memory alive, after she lost her battle with the illness in 2006.

"It has been a fabulous day," she said.

"We had about 60 customers and we didn't charge them but asked them to make a donation. They were ver, very generous and I think we have raised around £3,000 altogether.

"We also had people coming in just to make a donation and buy raffle tickets so everyone has been so supportive."
