Sparks flew in Wolverhampton when trainee welders battled it out in a competition.
Wolverhampton College hosted the competition to given its trainee welders a chance to show off their skills for the chance to win prizes.
First year students taking the college's Certificate in Engineering took on a series of craft challenges to win a range of welding clothing and accessories as well as store vouchers.
Among them was married 40-year-old mother-of-five Yvette Moseley, from Fordhouses, who took up welding after finding a teaching assistant course was not for her.
But the winner was 22-year-old Alan Quinn, from Birmingham.
College engineering lecturer Mike Gandy said: "There is a major shortage of skilled welders in this region and this competition was a great way to raise the profile of engineering among young people while also developing their welding skills."
