With this in mind, thousands of would-be developers and renovators flocked to the first day of the National and Homebuilding Renovating Show yesterday at Birmingham's NEC, for expert tips and inspiration on creating the perfect property.

The event also plays host to The Smart Home Show and The EcoHomes Show, embracing the latest high-tech home developments and environmentally-friendly building solutions from some of the country's leading firms.

Below, Michael Holmes - presenter of ITV1's 'Don't Move Improve' and Editor-in-Chief of Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine - gives us a quick lowdown on the event.

The show runs daily seminars and masterclasses on everything from adding maximum space and value to harnessing renewable energy in your home, as well as practical help and suggestions for understanding your building costs and finding the right plot of land.

Over the next week, we'll be bringing you a series of features from the event, showcasing some of the most innovative ideas and offering inspiration on how to transform your home and garden.

There's also a video interview with Philippa Evans, a Sussex homeowner who transformed her bungalow into a three-storey dream home in just four months.

For tickets and further information visit www.homebuildingshow.co.uk. Please note that from 3pm on Saturday 12th April, show tickets will no longer be available.
