Wolves FA Cup winning legend Sammy Smyth passes away at 91

Sammy Smyth scored a brilliant individual goal at Wembley in front of nearly 99,000 fans 67 years ago to wrap up the 3-1 win over Leicester City.

The Northern Irishman, who met his Wolverhampton-born wife Enid Evans while playing for Wolves, died aged 91 at his daughter Sheena's home in the Cayman Islands.

An inside forward bought from Irish League side Dundela for £1,100 in July 1947, Smyth scored 43 goals in 116 appearances for the club.

"Daddy was always very humble, and he remembered his days at Wolves with much sentiment," said daughter Sheena Smyth Conolly. "But he was always very modest about his success. He said he was in the right place at the right time. That would have been his description of those days in Wolves. He always remembered his time at Wolves fondly because that was where he met my mother."

Enid died of breast cancer in 2002 and a few years later Smyth moved to the Cayman Islands from County Down, where he lived after his football career finished.

A wholesaler and distributor of sports equipment, he worked with major companies like Puma, Peter Storm and Slazenger.

"It was a great team, and a great era," said Sheena.

"He was just fun-loving. A great character, who always had a twinkle in his eye. He had a great sense of humour, but he had no time for big egos or pomposity – a dignified gentleman."

Smyth's family are holding a funeral on Saturday, November 5, in the Cayman Islands, before returning his ashes to his church in Glencraig, County Down.

He is survived by his son Ian, 61, daughter Sheena, 58, and three grandchildren, Jennie, Lauren, and Lara.
