Newcastle have made Switzerland international Fabian Schar their fourth signing of the summer.

Schar, who played three games for his country in the World Cup finals in Russia, has joined from Deportivo La Coruna on a three-year contract.

The 26-year-old joins Martin Dubravka, Ki-Sung yueng and Kenedy among Rafael Benitez’s new recruits.

Schar told Newcastle’s official website: “I’m really happy to be here. This is a really big club for me – it has a big name and it is a brilliant chance for me.”

Schar joined Deportivo from Hoffenheim a year ago and made 25 appearances for the La Liga strugglers last season.

Benitez said: “I’m really pleased to welcome Fabian to Newcastle United – he’s an international, did well in the World Cup and has great experience.

“He adds competition in this position and that is a positive for the team.”

Meanwhile, Matz Sels has left Newcastle for Strasbourg, the goalkeeper having made 14 appearances for the club across two years.
