The 19-year-old swimmer, from Aldridge, has been battling injury all year and admitted she was 'devastated' to pull out of the Great Britain squad just a fortnight before the Paralympics gets under way.

Kearney, who has a condition which causes muscle weakness, said: "

I have been battling a recent progression in my condition and this, coupled with ongoing shoulder injury over the past six months, has massively affected my ability to train this season. I have fought really hard to find a way back from this and know that I did everything in my power to get to Rio, but it just wasn't to be."

Meanwhile, Russia will have no athletes at the Paralympics after their appeal against a total ban from the Games failed in the wake of the state-sponsored doping scandal.
