Jonas Andersen signed to replace Cameron Heeps

The 25-year-old comes in for Cameron Heeps, who endured a tough time with Wolves. And promoter Chris Van Straaten admits he had to make the switch following Heeps’ zero score in Monday’s defeat at Swindon.

“Team changes are not something we do lightly historically at Wolverhampton but we felt this was something we needed to do with both our own and Cameron’s best interests at heart,” Van Straaten said.

“When I signed Cameron in the winter, the praise and the correspondence received was that we’d made a cracking signing because he came on leaps and bounds in 2017; he looked to be on the verge of taking the next step up in his career.

“But for whatever reason that hasn’t happened. We’ve been working alongside him and helping him where we can and just as we thought he’d turned a corner a few weeks ago, he then failed to score at Swindon again in what was a pretty dismal performance.

“It hasn’t been through a lack of effort, but his below par performances have been affecting both him as a rider as well as ourselves as a club.

“We thank him for his efforts but we’re delighted to welcome Jonas to Wolverhampton.

“The cut-off date for transfers is fast approaching so we had to act quickly. “We’ve spoken to at least two other riders who are overseas who haven’t ridden in the UK before, but logistically it’s a difficult stage of the year to get those things to happen quickly.

“They would have also come in on a four-point assessed average and that would have kept Ash (Morris) in the main body – and I think both Ash and ourselves will benefit if he is back at reserve.

“So we’ve brought a rider in who has experience here in the UK and who is relishing the opportunity to ride in the top division. He’s looking forward to the challenge of being in the 1-5 in the main body of the team and is looking forward to making his debut on Monday.”

Andersen has been with Redcar in the second tier of British speedway since 2015.

Meanwhile, Peterborough and Birmingham racer Tom Bacon will again be used as a guest reserve against Leicester after impressing club bosses at Swindon, with Nathan Greaves still sidelined with a knee injury.
