The play-off chasing sides played out a thriller but there was eventually nothing to separate the sides on a night where National League speedway was the real winner.

The Heathens’ top four hopes looked to be in tatters as they threw away a number of points and were on the receiving end of some controversial refereeing decisions early on.

They were 10 points down after nine heats and in need of a miracle – but they fought back bravely to force a last-heat decider.

Tom Perry kick-started their comeback by brilliantly blasting from third to first with a brave ride in heat 10.

Star reserve Conor Dwyer then sensationally partnered Danny Ayres to a 5-1 in the very next race before Dwyer and Harris repeated the trick in heat 12.

They headed into the final race level and despite shutting out Tom Bacon, Perry and Ayres were unable to hunt down the impeccable Liam Carr.
