Wolverhampton Wolves extend their home run
Wolverhampton staged a stunning late fightback to preserve their unbeaten home record against King’s Lynn last night, writes Rich Jones.
Wolves looked in serious danger of losing their first meeting at Monmore Green since last August but they rallied in the closing stages to win 48-42 on the night and 102-78 on aggregate to book their spot in the Knockout Cup semi-finals.
Their aggregate lead never looked under any real threat – yet they still needed to dig deep to maintain their winning run.
They were six points down at the halfway stage after Kyle Howarth wiped out Lewis Rose on the final lap when desperately attempting to prevent a King’s Lynn 5-1.
Yet classy wins for Freddie Lindgren and Sam Masters got them back into contention before Max Clegg brilliantly blasted underneath Kai Huckenbeck to join Rory Schlein at the front and give Wolves the lead for the first time in heat 12.
From that point on they never looked back, with Masters and Lindgren performing heat 13 heroics to give them breathing space.
Masters expertly swooped around the impressive Troy Batchelor on the opening bend, whilst Lindgren demonstrated his quality in abundance to pick off the Australian with a clever cutback on the third lap.
Thorssell was passed by Batchelor in an exciting heat three but gained revenge with an excellent win over the former Grand Prix ace in heat five.
Howarth also won heat one before fading in the latter stages, losing second place in heat 10 to Thomas Jorgensen by a matter of inches on the final bend.
Wolves will be back in SGB Premiership action at Swindon on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Cradley’s Ryan Burton has vowed to be back on a bike sooner rather than later - despite a broken collarbone.
Burton is back at his Teesside home after suffering the injury in a Championship guest booking at Scunthorpe.
He’s set to have surgery to plate it in a bid to speed up the process but it seems he will miss a busy July.
Meanwhile, the Heathens’ match at the Isle of Wight tonight has been postponed after a poor weather forecast for the island.
