Wolverhampton Wolves make it seven wins in a row
Wolverhampton Wolves battled their way to a seventh straight league win with a 49-43 victory over Swindon at Monmore Green last night, writes Ryan Guest.
Parrys International Wolves appeared to be steaming to another comfortable victory, but were made to fight right to the death as the Robins walked away with a point for their efforts.
The top two riders in the world met in heat one, with Freddie Lindgren getting across Swindon skipper Jason Doyle from gate four while Kyle Howarth raced to a comfortable third for a 4-2.
Nathan Greaves led heat two, but a mistake on the final lap allowed visiting reserve duo Dany Gappmaier and Zach Wajtknecht to sneak up the inside as the Robins were gifted an early advantage.
Wolves seeked an immediate response in the third, but their chances seemed hampered when Jacob Thorssell destroyed the starting tapes after being too quick to make a quick getaway.
But as Rory Schlein made the gate, it took a determined Thorssell just two laps to work his way past his Swindon counterparts as the hosts moved in front again by two.
Wolves were unable to pull any further clear until heat six when a mid-meeting surge put them in the driving seat.
Lindgren, Sam Masters and Howarth all made the most of quick gates to take the chequered flag as Wolves opened up a 14-point lead courtesy of four race advantages in five heats.
Swindon nominated Doyle for double points in the 11th, but he would have to settle for second place after missing the gate. Aussie compatriot Masters stormed clear and was followed through by Mark Riss.
However, a slide off from the German on lap one allowed the visitors through as the scores were pulled back to 40-28.
A sensational ride from Schlein, which saw him work his way around the outside to go from last to first, appeared to put Wolves in control, but a 5-1 from Doyle and Morris in heat 13 not only ended Lindgren’s five-meeting unbeaten run, but also gave the Robins slim hope as they clawed back to within 10.
Wolves finally sealed another three league points in the penultimate race of the evening when Thorssell pulled off a tapes-to-flag victory in a shared heat.
Doyle and Morris pulled off another 5-1 in the final race as the visitors snatched a last-gasp consolation league point of their own.
Wolves are back at Monmore on Bank Holiday Monday when they host Poole (6pm) as part of a double header with Cradley taking on Belle Vue in the National League.
