A flash of hope for Wolves as Adam Skornicki, left, and Ricky Wells lead the way in heat seven only for the Brummies Martin Smolinski, in the red helmet, to work his way through and take the chequered flag.

'Sqora' was a part of the 2002 and 2009 league-winning sides and is without doubt one of the most popular riders to have ever graced the Monmore Green shale.

It's been a tough couple of years for the Polish racer who dislocated his hip during a spell with Birmingham in 2014 and has since spent the majority of his time in a management role back in his home country.

But Skornicki is keen to make a return to British Speedway and says it was great to experience the buzz he got from racing in front of his old supporters.

"It's been almost two-and-a-half years since I had my last meeting in England so it was great to get back on a bike over here," said Skornicki.

"It's a moment I've been waiting a long time for and to do it at Monmore Green was the perfect venue for me. As always, I really appreciated the opportunity to get some bike time in and I thank Chris (Van Straaten) and Pete (Adams) for putting me in the meeting.

"After winning my one race last night, I knew what the fans were waiting for and I couldn't let them down! When I was last racing over here, I didn't enjoy doing the doughnuts as much after one went wrong but I always felt like the fans expected one.

"I have to admit though that it was great to see them asking for another doughnut and I loved celebrating in my old style in front of the Wolverhampton fans once again. They were brilliant with me and I really appreciated them cheering me on all night."
