Wolves' miserable run of form goes on
Wolverhampton saw their miserable run of form continue in a 60-32 thrashing at Swindon last night.
The Monmore men travelled to the Abbey in desperate need of at least a point as they looked to turn their season around and reignite their play-off ambitions.
However, they were condemned to another demoralising defeat on their travels as their season continues to rapidly deteriorate.
They got off to the worst possible start as Troy Batchelor snatched second place from Jacob Thorssell on the run to the line.
He delivered Swindon a 5-1 in the opening race before Lewis Blackbird and Josh Bates both fell on the opening bend of heat two to gift the home side a rare 5-0.
When the home side cruised clear in the third race to build up a huge 15-2 lead it left Wolves with a mountain to climb, and they were never able to get into contention for a consolation point.
Their last throw of the dice came as Ricky Wells went for double points in heat nine.
Although he raced to Wolves' first race win of the night, a fall for Lewis Blackbird in the initial staging limited the swing to only three points to leave the visitors trailing by an unassailable 22.
By the time the meeting drew to a close, Swindon had built up a 28-point advantage to leave Wolves making a disheartened trip home.
Wells offered the bulk of resistance as he continued his solid run of form, eventually ending with a hard-fought paid 14 points.
Swedish youngster Thorssell also fought hard for little reward, with a determined pursuit of Lewis Rose in heat eight seeing him snatch second on the run to the line.
However, Wolves' heat-leaders again made minimal impact as Freddie Lindgren and skipper Peter Karlsson both struggled.
That's with the exception of wins in heats 10 and 13 respectively, while Tobiasz Musielak emerged unscathed from an awkward heat seven tumble but added only four points.
Blackbird withdrew with an ankle injury after his heat nine fall and reserve colleague Bates was also off the pace.
Wolves simply had no answer to the play-off chasing Robins and suffered their seventh defeat in eight meetings. They host Leicester at Monmore Green on Monday (7.30pm).
