Birmingham Brummies forced to fold in cash crisis

Birmingham Brummies speedway team has folded, it emerged today.

The announcement comes after the decision of promoter Alan Phillips to pull out of the club.

It means the club will be removed from the Elite League and its records expunged for this season.

The Brummies, who lost their last fixture 56-39 away to Belle Vue on Monday night, were formed in 2007 and are currently second from bottom of the table.

But it is hoped speedway can continue at Perry Barr this season in some format.

A statement from the British Speedway Promoters' Association read: "The British Speedway Promoters' Association can confirm the annulment of Birmingham Brummies Ltd, the Birmingham Speedway promotion.

"This is a decision made in accordance with the speedway regulations.

"However, the BSPA would also like to stress great efforts will continue to be made to see the continuation of the sport at Perry Barr Stadium."

Chairman Alex Harkess said: "There are great efforts being made to give the club every chance of concluding the season."
