Former Speedway world champion's Greg Hancock and Sam Ermolenko delight local fans

Hancock, putting in a rare British appearance, had the Heathens fans purring at Monmore Green.

The 43-year-old showed all the style that has kept him competing at the sport's highest level with a double-figure return.

And 52-year-old Wolves legend Ermolenko battled hard for his four points – and rounded off his evening by passing Grand Prix star Darcy Ward for second place in his final ride.

But while the Stars and Stripes played a big part – Wolves' Ricky Wells finished third – it was the blue and yellow of Sweden which finished top of the pile.

Home hero Freddie Lindgren won the meeting in fine style.

Lindgren sensationally worked his way from third to first to defeat Aussie sensation Ward and Wells in a thrilling Grand Final.

It capped off a wonderful evening of action in front of a good crowd to remember former rider and parts supplier Hughes while raising money for Cancer Research UK and new training facilities for young riders.

Lindgren had been in impeccable form, displaying supreme overtaking on several occasions while beaten just once in seven rides.

There were plenty of promising signs for Wolverhampton as they prepare for the play-off semi-final against Birmingham, with Wells a surprise challenger.

The Californian led much of the final before having to settle for third place.

Pole Adam Skornicki made the semi-finals while club asset Nicolai Klindt strengthened his case for guest bookings in the play-offs as he bagged 10-points.

Another Wolves asset currently not in their side – Pontus Aspgren – followed up his good Premier League form with a place in the final. But speedway was the overall winner.
