Wolves' Tai Woffinden hurt at British Grand Prix

Tai Woffinden was undergoing surgery today in a bid to maintain his world championship challenge.

Woffinden's collarbone was shattered at the British Grand Prix in Cardiff – an incident which, ironically, saw his Wolves team-mate Freddie Lindgren disqualified.

But the 22-year-old was going under the knife today – and hoping to be back on track for the next GP?series round, the Polish GP at Gorzow a week on Saturday.

Woffinden had made a blistering start to the meeting in front of hordes of Wolves fans with victory in the opening race.

Two hard-fought second places left him poised for another semi-final appearance – and at that point the Briton was actually leading the world title race.

But then came the nightmare heat 14 crash. Lindgren dived inside Woffinden without making contact and the latter then clipped Nicki Pedersen and fell.

Referee Krister Gardell disqualified Wolves skipper Lindgren, but Woffinden had to stand down.

To add insult to injury, his main world title rival Emil Sayfutdinov stormed to his third GP win of the series to extend his lead over at the top of the standings to eight points. Lindgren made the final and was fourth.

But Woffinden is remaining positive. He said: "I'm hoping to go private today (Monday) to have an operation to get the bone put back in place, and I'll do everything I can to make the next Grand Prix at Gorzow.

"It wasn't a disastrous GP as I still got seven points. I'm trying to think positive – I'm still second in the standings."
