Stafford joy as rivals routed

Stafford director of rugby, Andy Lewis, enjoyed his side’s emphatic victory over Burntwood in the Midlands 2 West Division on Saturday.

Lewis admitted that his team took a while to get going but once they hit their stride, they ran riot in a game that saw them score eight tries and cement their position in third.

“I think it’s fair to say we dominated once we had got past the 20 minute mark,” he said. “We were a little bit overeager in the opening stages, and the penalty count wasn’t great.

“But we then settled, worked out how we were going to play, scored a couple of tries and really cut lose after half-time.”

Alosio Yamoyamo and Jerry Qasenivalu scored twice for Lewis’ men, with Cristian Ureche, Dan Mills, Alex Rock and Carl Williams also getting their names on the score sheet.

Lewis saw it as a great response to the 40-12 cup defeat to Newark and he now looks ahead to the challenge of facing second placed Camp Hill away on Saturday.

“We were poor at Newark, everyone recognised that,” he said. “It was discussed, it had been a difficult week for the lads but we managed to put it right.

“We’re very much looking forward to the Camp Hill game, it will be tough, they’re a big strong, well respected rugby club.

“For a number of years we haven’t been in this position, looking down on teams in the league as opposed to up at them.”

The top of the table clash will be a tough test but Lewis is confident that Stafford won’t be overawed and will stick to their game plan.

“It’s likely that it is going to be wet and on a grass pitch that often dictates what kind of game you’re going to get,” he said.

“So it could be a forward battle but if we can, we will look to play a running game. But we will train as normal, prepare well and we have no fear about going there.”
