After surviving some early pressure from Stafford, Sam Carroll opened the scoring for St Leonards on 15 minutes with a well-worked try to the right.

Joe Garner extended the lead just before half-time with a penalty to go in 8-0 up.

The second half started as the first did – pressure from Stafford.

The well-drilled defence of Saints, however, held firm and once back in Stafford’s half a flying Carl Butler got on the end of a Rhys Powell kick to dot down.

Stafford got on the scoreboard themselves with a try from ex-Saints player Louis Dewsbury with 10 minutes remaining, but it was Garner who would have the final word with a penalty at the death to finish the game 16-5.
