Grand Slam for tennis ace Jordanne Whiley
Halesowen tennis sensation Jordanne Whiley has became the first British player to complete a calendar Grand Slam by winning the US Open wheelchair women's doubles title.
The 22-year-old and Japanese partner Yui Kamiji beat Dutch pair Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot 6-4 3-6 6-3 to complete the sweep of Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open crowns.
After most of the match had been played in stifling heat at Flushing Meadows, the players were forced off court by rain with Whiley and Kamiji leading 4-3 in a the decider.
But Whiley and Kamiji won back-to-back games following the re-start to seal the victory.
It was a first in tennis history, with no previous British player having ever won the same event at all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year.
"I can't describe how it feels to make history. I'm so proud of achieving this for British Tennis."
Whiley was one of three Brits on the Tennis Foundation's Wheelchair Tennis Performance Programme competing at Flushing Meadows this week.
And she said throwing some Motown shapes helped her secure the victory.
"I'm not usually good with rain delays but we busted out some moves in the locker room to some Motown and that helped," added Whiley.
"Me and Yui are really good friends and I love her to pieces.
"We had a really good first set but dipped in the second and I'm just so glad we pulled it out in the third."
