We'll beat the snooker cheats, says Steve Davis

Steve Davis today fired a warning to snooker cheats and insisted: "You will never win."

The six-time world champion believes the sport should not be embarrassed about match-fixing scandals.

Stephen Lee has been banned for 12 years after agreeing to lose the first frame of his games against Stephen Hendry and Mark King at the 2008 UK Championship in Telford. And 56-year-old Davis reckons snooker has nothing to hide and should stand up to the cheats.

He said: "No-one can get away with it. If all of a sudden someone is putting stupid bets on and never has a losing one, then it flags up. They know something's up.

"You couldn't get a better advert for stopping people cheating in the future by saying: 'You can't win, you think you might be anonymous but it's a big neon sign.' Every time they get caught and punished, that's the best advert.

"I've got the same view as Barry Hearn (World Snooker chairman) that the sport shouldn't be embarrassed if these cases come up.

"It's not great for the sport, but it doesn't hurt it long-term because you have to flush out the cheats.

"You scare the other ones that it might happen to them."
