Chasetown shock Rushall to secure Walsall Senior Cup
Chasetown manager Craig Harris was jubilant after he picked up his first senior trophy at the Banks's Stadium and in the process broke a spell of 11 losses in a row against arch-rivals Rushall with a 4-1 win.
The Pics, who had finished just outside the play-off positions in the Northern Premier League, were hot favourites to win the Walsall Senior Cup final against their neighbours, but they were well beaten in boss Neil Kitching's last game in charge.
Harris said winning the cup went some way towards making up for a season which had seen Chasetown finish well short of the play-offs in the division below Rushall.
He said: "It was a great performance against a very good side and we won the balls in the important areas and passed it well. That is how we can play but the season has been all about consistency and unfortunately we have not had enough of that but it is something we will try and put right."
The opening goal came on 20 minutes for Chasetown after Chris Gemmell had saved point blank from Jazz Luckie and Simon Brown's flag kick was eventually headed in by Joe Halsall.
Nick Wellecomme increased their lead on 62 minutes and 10 minutes later lobbed Gemmell to make it 3-0.
And on 73 minutes, former Rushall midfielder Danny Bragoli produced an equally adept finish. Jamie Spencer produced a fine individual goal a minute from time for what proved a consolation for Rushall.
