Clark and Williams at the double
James Clark and Kim Williams were double winners hen Cheslyn Hay Tennis Club hosted its annual club championships.
Not only did Clark win the men’s singles for a second time – beating defending champion Ant Boland 7-6, 6-2 in the final – he was also the victory in the 20-and-under singles, overcoming Alfie Allan-Smith in straight sets.
Kim Williams also triumphed in two finals – defeating Shameka Lp in a deciding set in the ladies’ singles, before teaming up with Jayne Ball to see off Millie Grimley and Janet Bailey in the ladies’ doubles.
The men’s doubles final was won by Dave Smith and Tom Woodhouse – beating Keir Bruder and Ian Stagg in straight sets – while Jayne Ball & Alfie Allan-Smith came from behind to beat Julie Edwards and Paul Lord in the mixed doubles final. The juniors were also able to take centre stage on club finals day.
Neve Harvey beat her younger brother Rhys Harvey in two tie-break sets in the under-8 singles, Mwaba Mulenga overcame Jonathan Wood in the under-10 singles and Lennon Wenlock beat Oliver Westwood at under-12 level.
In the under-14 singles, Zak Hurford, while Jarnel Dhillon saw off Keir Bruder in the under-16s.
Tournament organiser Chris Perrin said: “This was our biggest championships yet with 190 entries. The club is always open to new people with beginner coaching and also supporting competitive opportunities. We had over four hours of quality, competitive tennis played in a great spirit both with the junior and adult finals. It is always one of the highlights of the year and has been made even more special being LTA National Community Venue of the Year.”
