Netballers shoot to victory
Stafford Grammar School under-14 netball side came top of the class in the Stafford and District Schools’ Tournament.
The youngsters stormed their way to victory, netting 18 goals and conceding just five on their way to glory.
Ten sides from across Staffordshire checked in at Stafford Manor High for the final action of the season.
In the round-robin contest, teams were split into two groups.
The Grammar girls notched a 4-0 win against Brewood-based St Dominic’s, before edging out Blessed William Howard 1-0. Further 3-1 and 5-2 victories against Walton High and St Dominic’s Priory, respectively, placed them top of the table.
They then went on to clinch the trophy with a 5-2 win against fellow group winners Weston Road Academy in the final.
Their triumph followed hot on the heels of a successful campaign for the under-13 team in the Independent Schools’ Association (ISA) National Championships.
Facing some of the best teams in the country, SGS came third in their section and were entered into the plate competition, where they lost to Ipswich High and finished fourth.
Carly Slater, head of girls’ PE at SGS, said: “It was a great way for both our under-14s and under-13s to finish the season, which has understandably had to be cut short.
“They worked with one hundred per cent effort all season, so it’s fantastic to see that it paid off in these tournaments.
“They have trained regularly and should be really proud of themselves.”
