League hopeful their final showdowns will take place
The Stourbridge League are hopeful they will be able to dish out the silverware at some point later in the year.
Like leagues all across the country, they have gone into lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak.
“The league has been suspended at the moment and we are hopeful that we may be able to restart some time in the future,” said secretary Tony Kidd.
“Our aim is too finish the season at some point. But obviously the main concern at the moment is people’s health.”
The last round of action saw the Pairs Handicap and 3- a-side Handicap finalists decided.
In the Pairs, Andy Martin and Karl Weaver (Bahia’s SC) overcame Bob Guise and Wayne Whitmore (Kingswinford Cons) 171-117 in the last four.
Receiving 47 points start over two frames, Martin and Weaver just edged the first frame, and their opponents couldn’t make up the leeway in the second before the concession came.
Father and son Dave and Matt Whale (Baggeridge Social) will be their final opponents.
They saw their 42-point start against Gary Smith and John Betton (Pockets) cut by 26 in the opening frame, but they negotiated their way through frame two to secure a 151-115 victory.
The 3-a-side Handicap saw victories for Pockets SC and West Midlands Police against Stourbridge Institute and Baggeridge Social repsectively
Pockets progressed following a tense final frame.
Andy Smith seemed set to sweep them into the final, but went in-off a black with two reds remaining. Ashley Aston seized his chance to go three points ahead overall, but couldn’t leave the brown safe enough and Smith struck to clear brown, blue and pink to see Pockets through.
The Police had to give Baggeridge 49 points, but victories from Kev Franklin and Carl Southwick saw them lead by 26 going into the last frame.
Mark Sheehan, with the aid of a 33 break, then completed the job.
