Darren Byfield will ring changes for cup clash
Darren Byfield continues to settle back into life at Walsall Wood as he takes his side to Newcastle Town in the Staffs Senior Cup tonight.
Byfield’s first game back at the helm ended in a 2-1 home Midland League defeat to Coventry United on Saturday. But despite the result, the returning boss was upbeat following a battling performance.
“In the first half, the boys gave absolutely everything,” he said. “I can’t fault any of the players, the lack of games was telling, but the lads ran their socks off.
“Coventry came on much stronger than us in the second half, but they are a good side with a good manager. That’s why they find themselves second in the table.
“Our boys ran out of steam in the end. We know we need to get our fitness levels up and we need to braver on the ball in possession, but we will get our heads down and keep going.”
Having only returned to the club last week, Byfield is still assessing his squad. He will use tonight’s cup clash as a chance to rotate and test his player’s character.
“It’s only fair to have a look at those lads who didn’t get any minutes on Saturday,” he said.
“I am looking for attitude tonight, which players are prepared to roll their sleeves up and get through to the next round.
“We have good players, but that’s not enough to pick up points, clean sheets, win cup ties, we need to do the dirty side of the game too.”
Wood fell to a late goal against Coventry after striker Ben Lund had given the hosts a first-half lead, in a game dedicated to club legend Ron Tranter who passed away last month.
AFC Wulfrunians suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Newark Flowserve.
Tonight’s Premier Division action sees Ian Rowe take his in-form Sporting Khalsa side to Haughmond.
Fourth-placed Khalsa will be looking for follow up Saturday’s solid 3-0 home win over RC Warwick with another three-point return.
Lye Town travel to Cadbury Athletic keen to bounce back from a 2-1 loss away to Long Eaton United.
