Thaman’s knock, compiled from just 137 balls and featuring seven sixes, was a masterclass in the art of timing in almost every respect.

After reaching the century mark at the rate of a run a ball, Thaman took just 20 more to reach 150 as he helped his team reach 300 before being dismissed.

Phazey quipped: “The only thing that annoyed me was him getting out, as it meant I had to go in after 30 overs sat with my pads on!

“This was a very different innings from him as he usually scores at more than a run a ball from the start.

“On Saturday he took his time before exploding once he got the century. He told me before the game he wanted to show me how good he is. It is fair to say he did that!”

After his team had finished on 331-4 batting first, Phazey himself then took three wickets as Whittington were bowled out for 235.

Both Daniel Wilks (58) and Greg Hunt (54) offered resistance but were ultimately unable to prevent their team sliding to a 96-run defeat.

Cannock continue to prop up the South Staffs League Premier Division after falling to their sixth defeat in seven matches at home to Lichfield.

Rich Taylor-Tibbott top-scored with 92 as the visitors, batting first, compiled 300-5 from their 50 overs. Adam Braddock also hit a quickfire 80, from just 69 balls.

Cannock rarely looked like getting near the target, particularly after Lichfield seamer James Wilkinson had taken three quick wickets.

Eddie Martin, who top scored with 58 from 83 balls, at least provided some resistance after the hosts had slumped to 78-6.

But he ran out of partners as Cannock were eventually dismissed for 199.
