The 12-year-old from Pleck ABC will step into the ring to face Williams White, from Hastings club West Hill, at the K2 in Crawley tomorrow bidding to land a place in the final of the National Schoolboys Championships.

Webb has already secured the Midlands title in the 28kg category and booked his semi-final shot with a unanimous points decision over North Road BC’s Sean Curry at the Bridlington Sports Centre.

And the Aldrigge School pupil’s success has been achieved in quick time, with the youngster only having taken up the sport 12 months ago.

Pleck ABC coach Bobby Wood, a former World Games silver medallist, GB international and four-time national champion, is delighted by the youngster’s success.

“William only started boxing 12 months ago and he is going from strength to strength,” said Wood. “He didn’t know how to throw a punch a year ago!

“He has boxed brilliantly to get this far and win the West Midlands title.

“To get where he has this quickly is a fantastic achievement. But he is really dedicated. He never misses a training session and he is always first in and last out.

“Everyone at the club is rooting for him and hopefully he can win tomorrow and earn himself a shot at the national title on Sunday.

“If you reach the semi-final stage you generally get on the GB Pathway. If you win, then it’s the GB team, and that would be brilliant for William and the club.

“The club is buzzing at the moment,” added Wood, whose father Joe got the club up and running 40 years ago.

“Over the last 12 months we have had some cracking lads come through. And we are expecting a few of them to go on and win national honours.”
