The Gailey Reservoir club was named one of 11 finalists for the prestigious RYA and Yachts & Yachting Club of the Year Award.

Outgoing Commodore Tim Coleshaw received South Staffs’ certificate from the Great Britain sailing team’s James Peters at the prestigious RYA Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace in London.

South Staffs, who lifted the overall national award in 2011, were also one of five finalists to have been specially-recognised for achievement in a particular area – the club claiming the accolade for ‘Embracing Modern Communications’. This recognised the club’s proactive and forward thinking approach to communications and marketing.

The club is keen to attract newcomers to the sport and are offering free taster sessions at their annual start-of-season Open Day on Saturday, April 13, between 10am and 4pm.

One of the club’s experienced sailors will be on hand to show people the ropes. There is no need to book and all ages are welcome. Just bring soft-soled shoes, waterproofs and a change of clothes in case of inclement weather.

Based by Junction 12 off the M6, the club has been established for more than 60 years, and run RYA learn to sail courses, race training and also boasts a very popular junior training programme.
