Carter’s charges returned to top form with a 3-2 West Midlands Premier victory over visitors Hereford Lads Club, a week after they had fallen flat at rivals Cradley.

Carter says words were shared after the 2-1 defeat at Cradley, where Wednesfield’s players did not get started and some turned up late, and he was delighted to see the Cottage Ground outfit bounce back in style.

Goals from Jamal Pinnock, a Kev Nickle penalty and skipper Shaquille Lee’s free-kick strengthened their top five spot.

Fifth-placed Wednesfield are eight points behind Wolverhampton Casuals, in third, and could leap-frog Cassies, who surprisingly lost 3-1 at Dudley Town on Saturday, by winning their three games in hand.

“The bigger picture is the top six,” said Carter. “What we’ve done this season has completely changed our (original) aim, but top six still has to be an aim.

“A few results went for us and the lads were on a high. We want to win our last five to finish as high possible.

Dominated

“I’d have bitten your hands off for where we are, but third would be unbelievable. It’s in our own hands to finish fourth. The lads’ attitude has been brilliant.”

He added: “We bounced back from Cradley and performed like we have all season.

“The reaction was immense, I could not ask for any more.

“We absolutely dominated and were coasting, the scoreline flattered Hereford with their penalty late on.

“It was a must-win. A massive game for us. With all the talk of top six there is a bit more pressure on us, we’ve got a bit more breathing space but we won’t be taking our foot off the pedal.”

Tividale’s title hopes were given a major boost without kicking a ball as rivals Haughmond could only draw at Pershore.

Dave King’s men now have a one-point lead with both sides having three games to play.

Fifth-bottom Dudley Sports remain in the relegation mire after a 4-2 loss at AFC Bridgnorth, mid-table Cradley won 3-1 at Shifnal while Black Country Rangers and Smethwick drew 1-1.

In Division One, second-placed Darlaston Town (1874) are keeping pace with table-toppers Worcester Raiders. They remain three points behind after a 1-0 win over Team Dudley.

Gornal Colts claimed the Division Two title on the final day by beating AFC Bentley 1-0.
